I don't know about you, but I love fresh flowers! Just looking at a fresh bouquet on my table brightens my day. It took at least a half a year, but I eventually found a flower shop within walking distance to my apartment. I can buy fresh roses for about 50 cents each.

This is one of my favorite vacation photos. Just looking at it reminds me of the hot sun, beaches and clear blue water. I can't wait to get back there!

As much as I've traveled recently, I think it's pretty normal to bring things back with you from vacation. That way you'll always remember your trip long after you've unpacked your suitcase. I enjoy bringing home a variety of things. Some type of local art is always catching my eye. And I'm really big on practical items. I love buying them, I love gifting them.

It's common in Chinese culture to give gifts. I've received a variety of things in the two years that I've lived here. Here is a glimpse at some of the traditional Chinese gifts I received recently from students, teachers and friends.

In Langfang, it's difficult to get real western food. There are several restaurants that serve westernish food, but the taste and quality is not very good. The price for these dishes is usually very expensive and not really worth it. Chinese food can be incredibly cheap and usually tastes pretty good. We do have a few American chain fast food restaurants in town, but I can't tolerate eating fast food that often.

In Chinese astrology we are currently in the year of the monkey. I purchased this mug from Starbucks shortly after the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) Holiday. I love the shape, gold and white details, and of course the cute monkey design. It has quickly become one of my favorite mugs for drinking tea at home.

Happy 4th of July!
My neighbor, and fellow American, hosted a 4th of July party today on our school campus. A few months ago they opened a new fountain on campus surrounded by picnic tables. This outdoor area is so typical in the USA, but really uncommon here. It's the first area like this that I've seen around the city I live. So to celebrate the holiday, we enjoyed a westernish style picnic with students and teachers.

I'm living in Langfang, which is basically a suburb of Beijing. Although the selection is growing, it is difficult to find international brands or products here. The city is growing and changing, but there is limited foreign influence. Walking down the street or shopping in the main plaza I am still stared at constantly, people take photos of me and treat me as though I am a VIP.

6+ Months In China
It has now been more than six months of living in China for me. I had every intention of posting sooner about where I'm at with my life here, but I could never quite find the right words.
When I first decided to move to China, I was in the midst of my divorce, I graduated months before with my masters degree and I was searching for a job. I was also craving adventure and travel; two things that had been sorely missing from my life. My plan was to move to China and teach ESL for a year while I figured out what I wanted to do next. I was in a great position because I had nothing tying me down and I could do absolutely anything I wanted. This was equally terrifying though because my life had completely up-ended and I had no idea what it was that I wanted anymore. I had no long term goals or even a solid career choice to work towards. I thought that over the next year, I would figure it all out. Then I would return to the states in pursuit of the dream career I came up with once the dust had settled.
Well, life doesn't always go the way we plan. After I returned to school following the Spring Festival holiday in February, I still had no idea what I wanted to do next. I've spent the last few months trying to discover my career passion. I truly had nothing pulling me in any direction or even something compelling me to move home, move somewhere else or stay in China. Finally I decided that I needed to cut myself some slack. There is no rule that I need to have my life all figured out in one year. I was placing unrealistic expectations on myself and the only thing it was doing was creating anxiety for me. So what if I still don't know which direction my life is headed. I'll get there eventually and I can still enjoy life day by day, picking up new experiences as I go.
Ultimately, I decided to renew my contract with the school I am currently teaching at. I solely based the decision on the fact that I have a job here, an apartment here, and I've started to make my life here. At least that is something. If I moved again, I'd be starting all over at the beginning having to secure a job, apartment, and meeting all new people. At this point, I'm not ready to start from scratch all over again. I realized that I haven't taken a lot of photos over the past few
months, which tells me that I am growing accustomed to my environment
and I feel at home. The weirdness of China has started to grow on me and feels almost normal.
Recently, I discovered that I like teaching ESL but I don't love it. It's okay for now as a job, but I won't make it a career. I'm gaining valuable experience that will transfer to other fields though, so I'm taking it for the experience that it is. I do love living abroad and I dread the thought of returning to a job in the USA with only two weeks of vacation a year. I love having so many exciting places to explore close to my home. I also discovered that what's been missing in my past jobs is respect. I never felt challenged or appreciated for my skills and abilities. I know that I'm capable of so much more than I've been given credit for. I want to feel like I am contributing something to a great goal rather than just pushing papers and punching a time clock. This is something I'll keep in mind as I seek the perfect career field for me.
Over the next year, I hope to continue my path to self discovery. Little by little I imagine I will put the pieces of my life back together again and find a career that really drives my passion. My friends tell me that I'm in the middle of some romantic comedy. I just haven't found my happy ending yet. Someday, all the pieces will fall into place and everything will make sense. For now, I'm still in Act I struggling to find myself. As hard as that is, it's still a part of the story.
What drives you to stay where you are or move on to something new?

Walmart in China
When I first learned that my apartment was going to be walking distance away from the nearest Walmart I was pretty thrilled. I mean, I was familiar with Walmart and their prices were reasonable. How could you go wrong? Plus I love shopping at grocery stores in different countries that I visit. I get a feel for the local customs and cuisine. Not to mention there are just so many products for sale that I can't find at home.
My first few hours in China I had the experience of visiting our local SuperWalmart. And although I was expecting it to be different from back home, it was still a little overwhelming. Not to mention, on my first visit I was exhausted from a long flight and sweaty from the plane and 93+ temps in Beijing. Thankfully I had a local teacher to guide me through my first visit, and I've been back many times since to purchase food and items for my apartment.
I was excited to see a few familiar items, although they came in unusual flavors. Look for a future post on my Oreo and Lays potato chip taste test.
The packaging is mostly in Chinese, so I need someone to show me items that I am looking for. Sometimes there is an English translation on the package, but it isn't always helpful and the translations aren't always correct
The meat and seafood section was also a bit shocking. The stores here don't prepackage meats. The meats are just out there on display in open air. I still haven't had the courage to purchase any of the raw meat for sale in the supermarkets.
Eggs and milk are found on the shelf and not in the refrigerated section in the USA. However, I have since purchased bottled milk from a refrigerator.
I've been to Walmart probably a dozen times now and I'm more acquainted with the options available. Sometimes it just takes a little getting used to.

What are your experiences grocery shopping in a foreign market?
